One of my favorite movies of all times is Rear Window with Jimmy Stewart, and yes, it's probably because secretly, I am 75, and yes, it's probably because secretly I wish I looked like Grace Kelly.
So this photographer (Jimmy Stewart) breaks his leg and is laid up in his apartment where he can watch everything going on in the apartment building across from him. So he starts watching everyone's lives through the windows! And there's a murder!
Or at least HE thinks there is...
You HAVE got to see it!
Okay so I am not proud of this, but one of the things that I do A LOT is watch my neighbors, (Will LOVES this-NOT) and after writing about Ernesto for three years, you already knew this, but lately, I've been watching the house across the street because a new couple moved in about 9 months ago.
I was really excited because they seemed "normal": kids our age, employed, friendly, no directional club thumping music, no excessive vodka drinking (that I could tell, when I went through their recycling-OH I AM KIDDING!)
Then winter came.
You know what happens. Everyone hibernates. So we never saw them. But I had high hopes for this spring! Maybe we would be the "fun neighbor" friends! Maybe we would be sipping margaritas while the kids paddled in the little play pool! Oh I had such dreams!!
Not anymore.
Two weeks ago, I saw boxes and a couple of pick up trucks, and I noticed Neighbor Guy's car coming and going a lot.
Uh-oh.
Then about two weeks ago, there was a strange dude standing in the driveway...
Neighbor gal came home. No kids.
Garage opened. Both went in.
Garage closed.
No one came out all night.
Strange new car stayed all night.
I know this because I kept checking all night. I am KIDDING!
Two days ago.
New dude again. I am going to call him Freaky Sneaks.
(He wears those black sneakers with the white soles-didn't that cult wear those when they were waiting for the spaceship? -maybe they were just white...anyway, the shoes creep me out...)
This time, though, Creepy Sneaks has a BABY.
Neighbor Gal pulls up.
She and her kids get out.
EVERYONE goes in.
Sigh.
In the morning Creepy Sneaks car is gone.
This made me really really sad.
Apparently winter wasn't just about hibernation across the street.
6 months. That much changed in 6 months??
I have been really bothered by this.
I have been pacing back and forth in front of my front window fretting over Neighbor Gal's life.
I don't agree with her introducing her children to Creepy Sneaks so soon.
Should she be letting him sleep overnight already?
Is she just separated or is she going for the Big D?
Did they even TRY counseling????????
Then I realized.
Uh, maybe I was getting a little too involved.
Gee, ya think?
So I've been trying to lay off the Front Window because what if I am totally wrong about the whole thing?
What if Neighbor Guy is Sleeping with the Enemy #2?
Or what if creepy sneaks is Will's next best friend? (but dude, get some different shoes, seriously)
Or what if Neighbor Gal is super cool like I thought?
So maybe I will just stick to Ernesto.
He's so so Rear Window..and so much easier to figure out.
